GIFTBAR HOW-TO: INSTAGRAM TIPS & TRICKS

You want to show off your #OOTD to all of your followers, but the mirror pic is just too difficult to master. Enter the flat lay.

A flat lay Instagram photo is exactly what it sounds like… You lay the components of your photo flat on a surface and take the picture with your phone from above (step stool may be required).

If you’re anything like us, your entire Instagram feed is full of fashion bloggers and impeccably stylish boutiques who—on the daily—give you major outfit envy with their flat-laid ensembles. So why do they do it? Because it’s nearly impossible to take a picture of yourself that includes not only your insane Chloé boots, but also shows off your new fall YSL lipstick shade.

There isn’t a tall (or flattering) enough mirror in the universe.

Here’s how to get all the double taps on your flat lay Instagrams (featuring some of our most fashionable Giftbar merchants).

1. Choose a theme.

And stick with it. Whether it’s a snap of your outfit or makeup look of the day, or a carefully curated pic of your nighttime routine essentials, all flat lays should have a theme. It would make no sense to place a new sweater next to an artisanal cheese plate and a too-pretty-to-burn candle, right?

2. Stick with a color palette.

Let’s face it, none of your followers know or care how long it takes you to compose the perfect flat lay Insta post. So take time to collect products that look great not only on their own, but together as a cohesive photograph. As we all know, Instagram content is less about substance than it is about imagery. Taking the extra step to color coordinate will guarantee more likes.

3. Take the picture as a square.

There’s nothing worse than having to crop out an integral part of a photo because you took the pic with your iPhone camera on full screen. Grrr. Our suggestion? Just keep your camera on square mode all the time. We all document our entire lives anyway.

4. Add visual interest.

Think like your Photography 101 professor from the art class you were forced to take in college and think outside the box (literally). By making a few items extend beyond the frame, you can easily add visual interest to any flat lay. And by incorporating products or accessories that stand upright on the flat surface, added dimension and texture can instantly upgrade your picture.
