Fur, sequins, plaid, color blocking… It all went down this season at New York Fashion Week.

The problem: Most of us can’t walk down the street covered head to toe in fur, decked out in diamonds, or wearing plaid on plaid… on even more plaid. Well, we could, but runway looks weren’t really styled to be worn on the city sidewalk anyway.

The solution: Taking the runway to the realway.

1. Fur-ocious Outerwear

Fur has always been an autumn trend, but for Fall 2016, designers cranked up the fuzz a few notches. Proenza Schouler went for patchwork; Rodarte played with color; Vera Wang ditched the sleeves, and Oscar de la Renta got graphic. To take this trend to the street, stick to one fur piece — the jacket — and belt it to show off your shape. And because your outerwear is so striking, keep the rest of the look simple with everyday basics: a sweater, worn-in denim, and your favorite booties.

2. Sequins, Sparkle & Shine

Embellishment has always been and will always be a trend, no matter what season of NYFW. Sequins and shine are continuously a red carpet staple, whether it’s a bejeweled number by Marchesa, a sexy shift by Michael Kors, a Tommy Hilfiger sequined frock, or Jenny Packham’s mix of metallics. Of course, most of us reading this aren’t headed to the Oscars next week, but when you’re getting dressed for your girlfriend’s red carpet themed viewing party, try switching up the metallic textures. Stand out in a slinky sequined mini, but keep the rest of the shine subtle with silver sandals, a chrome-accented clutch, and an embellished headband à la Gigi in Tommy.

3. School is in Session

The bell is ringing, and you’re late to hop on this trend. Ralph Lauren is known for his classic, equestrian wear, taking it to the schoolyard this season with a mix of plaid; Jason Wu combined two trends into one look by adding a fur collar to his schoolgirl-esque design; Coach 1941 channeled their inner jock, and Tory Burch just couldn’t resist the sequin trend either. For a more sophisticated take on preppy (rather than simply wearing your old high school uniform), play with pattern by topping your look with a striped shirt and adding an understated plaid clutch into the mix. The cardigan acts as an homage to Danny Zuko’s varsity athlete phase at Rydell High, and no uniform is complete without a loafer. Obviously.

4. Pantone Was Right

When Pantone announced two shades of the year — rose quartz and serenity — we couldn’t decide which one we loved more. Clearly, designers were able to pick a favorite. While Tibi went monochromatic with the rose quartz, Marissa Webb, Ulla Johnson, and Creatures of Comfort were all on the same page when it came to pairing the shade of the year with bold, yellow hues in every variety. We love this unexpected combo, but making it wearable can be a bit tricky. Take inspiration from Tibi and keep the clothing monochromatic. Add a neutral sandal to soften the color impact, but make a serious statement with an eye-catching yellow Fendi bag and matching Fendi shades.
